A Note On Graunwatch

November 30, 2011

This is a brief note from the Graunwatch editor

I, Quiet Riot Girl, run Graunwatch alone, but have recently really appreciated input – in the way of comments, tips, and ideas/content for my posts from all you Graunwatchers. Thanks!

As readers will know, my work in general, and my posts at Graunwatch, often reference the writings of Mark Simpson.

It was actually discussions with Simpson that inspired me to set up Graunwatch. His approach to gender, feminism and journalism/politics has informed my work here.

However I want to make it clear that, though I reference his work, he does not endorse the project or the content of my posts.

I won’t stop using Simpson’s work as a reference point. He is one of few writers I know at the moment who has really critiqued the ‘moralism’ of the Guardian, especially the feminism espoused by its ‘female columnists’. And his understanding of gender is uniquely valuable.

But everything here is completely my own opinions. I take full responsibility for it.

I hope that is clear.

Keep sending in links, tips, ideas to the usual places:

Great article by the guardian that makes fun of an australian mens health and suicide prevention charity…. dead men are hilarious.
Expecting Lucy Mangan to make 10 minutes worth of research too much?

Oh god that is almost a joke but it’s not.

How nasty. And it brings us back to what people were saying on my qrg blog , that women sometimes present themselves as ‘martyrs’ but that is often their own doing. especially in 2011

I think it has to be said (at the risk of sounding smarmy or overly worshipful), Graunwatch is a great service to us all- especially when Graun articles are thrown around willy nilly (especially by the younger of us) and taken to be the truth, what must be right, and if you don’t agree you’re a scummy facist who hates poor people/women/ethnic minorities/etc…

While I’m here I might as well leave a link…

I guess it’s along the same kind of formula we all now expect, but there’s something about the fallacies and hyperbole that just launches it into the realm of the bizarre. I try to avoid fussing about individual comments, but this one’s from a graun contributor so I’ll bite: http://www.guardian.co.uk/discussion/comment-permalink/13544022

The claim that pornography is advertising/capitalists ordering us what to do seems pretty wrong to me, porn is fantasy- if you removed the sexual content then, well, it’s really just plain entertainment with shoddy acting. And then the argument becomes all entertainment is really evil capitalists trying to control you. It’s the graun, what can you expect?

I post this *just* as you upload a whole post on it, darn it…

ha someone else linked to it too -we are all on the same wavelength at least.

I’ll put your comments in the comments under the post.

Thanks for the kind words about Graunwatch!

A little bit out of place on Graunwatch, but this seemed to jump out at me (maybe something for QRG HQ?):

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/8932291/Girls-should-learn-about-sexism-says-head.html

I guess it’s more of what’s being covered rather than the article itself, but I think it is still worth mentioning sometime. While what she says might be true for a small number of men (not many, and definitely not ‘men’ in general), there is of course no proposal to equally mention similar attitudes held by misandrists… I’m particularly interested in hearing what you think of it, as from what you’ve posted you have quite a bit of experience in academia (admittedly quite different, but it’ll be interesting to see how it takes root at different levels in our education system). Hearing this, I am not really surprised to hear boys are hugely falling behind girls in school.

N.B. Of course being the telegraph I wasn’t sure of the whole story, but after checking a few other sources it checks out.
